How much do you love your pets
This mourning I had to make a mind numbing decision on whether to save our dog Daisy or put her down. She was attacked by one of our other dogs this mourning severely injuring her. The major problem is that Vets want the money up front and most people cannot pay that ammount up front. As it stands I did not have the heart to put her down and she will have several long weeks of healing ahead of her. Now we have to fing a home for the other dog as we cannot have this happenning again and that is going to be hard on me also. Each one of these animals holds a place in our hearts because they are part of our family. We have a hard choice in front of us that I would not wish one anyone. |
RE: How much do you love your pets.
So sorry to hear this!!! Wow!! This subject is hard for me to talk about, but I'll tell ya what happened to our dog! When Clark had surgery a few years ago, I was at the hospital. My Father-in-law was trying to help us out with the mowing. Our dog was on a cable outside. My Father-in-law LOVED our dog!! He was the BEST DOG I've ever had!! He went boating & fishing with us!! He was part of our family!!
I came home from the hospital & saw a black trash bag besides the dog house...It wasn't there that morning! I then turned to the apartment & saw Clark's Mother-in-law walking towards me with her arms stretched out & crying!! I said,"Where's Gizmo?" I dropped my purse, keys everything!!!
Well, that day my Father-in-law was mowing & got Gizmo's cable wrapped around the riding lawn mower! He didn't know it & our dog didn't have a chance!! I asked where Clark's dad was & he walked around the building, sobbing!!! I reached out & hugged him!!! We were all crying!!!
Then I had to go back to the hospital & tell Clark. When I went into his room, he knew something was wrong, cuz I was still crying! After I told him what had happened, he immediately asked the nurse what would happen if he walked out of the hospital without his Doctor's release! He told her"My wife needs me now!" And what had happened to our dog. She called the Doctor & they released him!! We went back home. As we looked by the shop (where Clark works), we saw his dad & step mom cleaning the mower!!! Tears just poured out of my eyes!!!! They did cremate him & offered to get us another dog, but we didn't want another dog!! We will cherish the memories that we have!! xoxo Shirley

RE: How much do you love your pets.
We feel for you SO much! We had 4 dogs and a cat for 15 years. Our kids are grown and on their own. The dogs and cat are very much a part of our lives. We spend every waking moment with them that we are home. We had to put two of our dogs down this year and it broke our hearts. We decided when the rest are gone, we were not getting anymore. We just can't stand the heartache of losing them! We love animals so much, but losing them is too much. Yes, vets are expensive! Our black lab got sick a few years back and the vet kept her over the weekend and it cost us over $1000. We don't have that kind of money either. They were nice enough to let us write them a STACK of post-dated checks. I don't where to draw the limit on expenses. It's a hard thing, but we feel your pain and will keep you in our thoughts. We always try to remember to be thankful for the time we were together and the joy they brought to our lives.

Sharon came home tonite and gave me one. But it was only a little one. She has been sick all day and it was a very rough ride home for her. Hope a good nites rest in her own bed will pep her up. |

RE: How much do you love your pets.
Damn it Todd & Shirley... It's ok for a grown man 2 cry with one eye but not both of them is it? Gizzmo never had a fear of riding mowers, when I mowed I let him run loose, That dog would follow me around & come up 2 the side of it & look at me as he was saying I wanna ride 2 Tator... Pops never knew Gizz had no fear of a mower & gizz didn't know it could kill him.............. Damn it, real hard 2 see right now... Anyways when someone starts talking about their dog Pops puts his head down... I puts my hand on his back & say 2 him We've got some cars 2 work on & We're burning daylight |

RE: How much do you love your pets.
OK so now I'm crying....I had 5 animals, 3 cats and 2 dogs. Years ago I had a cat with crystals and after spending 1200 on my credit card (money we didn't have) he was no better and had to be put down, I never stayed with him which is something I have always regretted.
About 18 months ago I put down my 12 year old cat due to heart problems and one of my boys and I stayed in the room and the other son and his dad waited outside. It was very peaceful and I would never have it any other way.
About 2 weeks ago I woke up to find my 20 year cat with half her body covered in blood (she was vomitting blood) my friends a vet and she told me she had never seen so much blood on a cat before. This one I held in my arms as she was put down, again with one son beside me and the other waiting outside.
I have creamated both and have a memorial garden infront of our house but recently have thought about getting my first tattoo, one paw print for each of them.
My dog is almost 17 years old and I know her time is coming faster than I would like. My friend whose husband is also a vet said doesn't think she can handle putting down my dog and asked that when the time comes I bring her to her husband.
All in all we have been very lucky as our pets seem to have long lives.
That will leave us with one 9 yr old cat and a 5 yr old dog. I can't imagine my life without pets in it but recently found myself wondering if when these last 3 pass on whether that will be it for me or not.
Earlier this year is when I inheirited my second dog. My sister no longer wanted her dog after her daughter was born (not happy with her choice) so she put her on a plane and sent her to me. On day 2 of having the dog we noticed blood in the snow and took her to see my friend. He found 9 bladder stones each the size of a marble. My newest dog is only 6 1/2 lbs so you can imagine the size her poor bladder had been stretched too. Her little body was full of infection and she was on her way to dying. We of course had the surgery done to get the stones removed. Even at the friend discount is was over 1000. FYI her stones were caused by being fed people food rather than dog food.
So as for money spent it would depend on the vets advice. If my pets could be helped and live happily then I would spend it but if I was told they would be better off being put to rest I would do that. |
RE: How much do you love your pets.
In the last 20+ years we've had, 2 dogs, 3 cats and 3 birds. Their all gone now, except my Pink Ring Neck African Dove.
The last 2, a dog and cat, died from that bad food/grain from China, a few years ago.
My dove, Shar, flew out the door last summer, and spent the night out in the wild. The next day, she answered my call, landed in the front yard and allowed me to take her back in the house.
Rona, our last dog, was more then a pet. She was trained by me in, Hand Sign, so you didn't need to, tell her, to do some things, like, walk, stay and dead dog. She stayed, Dead Dog, and watched an elk walk to a couple of feet of her. She could also retrieve and pick up things for my wife. (she was legally blind and in a wheelchair. Her loss, was like loosing a child.
Vet bills run into the many 1000's.
Sorry for all your loses. |

We are so glad it worked out for you guys. Your right, money can be replaced but the love and joy that a dog brings to your family cannot be replaced.

Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. I am especially thankful for all your touching stories. Even as the freshness of my crisis is before me, I can relate to your stories as well.
Daisy is doing a lot better, hoping to hear from the Vet before I head to the Doctors myself. As promised here is a photo of Daisy...one of my fav's!

RE: How much do you love your pets.
Daisy update... we had to have a second surgery today as one wound was not draining properly. She is back to her normal self except for the tubes sticking out of her body. Badly bruised, broken ribs but her personality is perfect...already tried to chase a cat!
I truly appreciate everyones prayers and sharing their stories, it means so much to me!
